Overcome Self Sabotage In Your Coaching Business | Coaching Coaches

Picture it... you've just finished creating your course, and then:

  • Perfectionism
  • Procrastination
  • Getting stuck in the learning cycle (I need to learn more, do more, etc)
  • SELF SABOTAGE!

That's why today is all about overcoming the self-sabotage and limiting beliefs that could be holding you back in your coaching business.

Self-sabotage can be tricky to identify because oftentimes we don’t even know we’re doing it. Once you’re aware of it, however, you can catch yourself and start shifting some of your beliefs and behaviors to move past it and overcome your self-doubt.

When first starting out in your coaching business, it’s common to feel like you’re some kind of imposter. You might feel like:

  • Since you don’t have very much experience as a coach
  • No one will trust you enough to work with you
  • The market is too saturated and no one needs your service

There might also be feelings of self-doubt in your ability to support your clients in getting results.

One of the most common times I see self sabotage show up in a coaching business is when my clients are just about to complete or launch a course.

They spend all this time and energy creating the content, and then floods of self doubt start coming at them.

  • Was it good enough?
  • Did I come across as friendly enough?
  • Is anyone really gonna buy this thing?

Here’s the thing, friend. When you make the leap and become more visible it can feel like you’re taking a risk.

I get it... It’s scary to start getting on Live video more often, or giving your followers a behind the scenes look at your actual life.

This is when your mind is going to try to stay in a place that feels comfortable, and talk you out of taking these risks.

So, what happens is that you start sabotaging yourself by not showing up online consistently. And when you don’t show up consistently >> Are you really letting people know about your services and offers enough?

Or are you kind of mentioning it, but only a little, and only on a platform where not many people will see it.

If you found yourself nodding your head and saying, mhmmm, no worries.  Follow these four steps so you can start overcoming self-sabotage, kick self-doubt in the tush, and help more people.

Step 1: Map Out What You’re Good At

Forget the whole “fake it till you make it” mentality. I say, KNOW what you’re good at, and step into those feelings of confidence.

Remember, what you’re naturally good at and comes easy to you doesn’t come easily to everyone. THAT’S exactly why we need you.

Start by making a mind map of the different topics, concepts, tools, strategies, and techniques you can help a beginner accomplish from start to finish.

It could be as simple as how to write their first blog, creating a youtube thumbnail, or the 3 steps to beginners meal prepping… to more complex topics like creating a sales funnel or the 8 things every webinar needs in order to convert.

Step 2: Track Your Habits (Awareness)

Intentionally being aware of our habits, patterns, and cycles is one of the most important things to do in order to start shifting them. Here are a few things to ask yourself, and give honest answers to:

  1. Do you get stuck in a content creation cycle so you don’t have to actually launch your coaching program or course?
  2. Do marketing and selling your products, programs, and services feel uncomfortable so you create a perception of overwhelm for yourself?
  3. Have you become a pro at coming up with excuses as to why you “can’t” get more clients, do more videos, or hit your next income goal?
  4. Is it typical for you to procrastinate?
  5. Have you ever lashed out at a partner, friend, or family member because you’re just so “stressed?”
  6. Do you have a negative mindset around technology?
  7. Are you blaming “the algorithms” for not getting seen on social media?
  8. Are you prone to giving up and not finishing what you started?

These realities might not be the easiest pill to swallow at first, but here we are! Awareness is step one.

Then after that, you get to start taking action and shifting those limiting beliefs and self sabotaging behaviors.

Step 3: Do ONE Thing

Multitasking is a scam. Seriously, according to a Harvard Business review, Focusing on more than one thing decreases your productivity by 40% and lowers your IQ by 10 points.

So why do we keep kidding ourselves?

After hearing that stat, I highly encourage you to start building up your focus muscle and give your attention to one thing at a time.

So, here’s what my mentor did with me when I first started working with her. Each day, I was instructed to give myself one or two tasks to accomplish.

Something that I learned doing this was that 99% of the time projects took me at least twice as long as I estimated they would.

Then, by the end of the month I had a TON completed which was such an amazing feeling!

So, I’m going to challenge you to do the same. Focus on your one or two things each day, and then see what you can accomplish in a month.

By using focus to complete tasks and projects, you're proving to yourself that you’re capable and building up self trust.

This feeling of confidence is one of the best ways to combat the self-doubt and limiting beliefs that so many online coaches struggle with.

Step 4: Have People Waiting On You.

Whether it’s hiring a team or pre-selling a course, the fact is that when you have other people waiting on you, you DELIVER!

For example, your team is going to need you to be the visionary of your company in order to do their jobs. You have to show up and provide them with the support they need in order for them to create the things you hired them to create.

If you hire a video editor, for example, you’re going to have to be ahead of the game with filming your videos so they can do their job.

Another way to do this is to pre-sell a course. When you do this, people have given you their money and time commitment. At that point, you have no choice but to create the content and show up for them.

Pre-selling a course helps you build confidence, knock out ideas of self-doubt, and can disprove your limiting beliefs by giving proof that you’re worthy, and that people are eagerly waiting to work with you.

Now, I’ve personally used these 4 steps with myself and my clients and they WORK!! So, now's the time to stop sabotaging yourself in your coaching business and start confidence-building strategies so that you can show up as the badass I know you are.
