How To Create an Online Course

Today I’m going to give you the 3 steps you absolutely cannot skip if you want to create and monetize an online course fast. This is how you’re going to scale your business, influence & impact more people, and increase your bank account!


I started packaging my knowledge into online courses 6 years ago after going through Brendon Burchard’s Experts Academy.  Since then, I’ve created 4 online courses and hundreds of thousands of dollars, and I’m in the process of launching 4 mini-courses this year.


Needless to say, I have a good sense of the challenges coaches come across in the planning phase, creation phase, and launching phase of packaging their knowledge and getting their message out there! 


So, If this is something you’ve been excited about creating in your business model but don’t necessarily know where to start, then utilize these 3 steps to begin creating your online course today…


Step #1: Solidify Your Online Course Framework

Your online course framework is a detailed outline of your best knowledge, content and activities that you organize in an easily applicable step by step process. This is what you use to take your students from the challenges they’re having to the results you’re promising.


Now, it's important to mention that something you’re going to want to focus on when creating your online course framework is SIMPLICITY.


The simpler and clearer you are with your information, the faster your students will take action and experience success. Ultimately, you want your online course to be a simple, yet detailed step by step that gently guides your students to an end result.  If it’s TOO detailed it could create confusion, so the simpler the better.

Your framework is going to include 6 key components that will guide your students to results:

1st- Main topics & Concepts.

2nd- Subtopics.

3rd- Strategies, tips, tools & directives

4th- Stories and examples

5th- Implementation Opportunities & Bonuses

6th- Measurable Results

Step #2: Research

Research is imperative to not only your online course, but your online business as well.


***Meaning… DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!***


Most entrepreneurs skip over this step which is why they create for YEARS without any real traction, and then typically give up.  


This key step in creating your online course is what will separate YOU from those entrepreneurs and it’s one of the secret ingredients to preparing your online course for delivery.


Specifically, you’re going to do 3 different types of research:

1st you’re going to research influencers in your niche. I think we can all agree that there’s no new content in our niche at this point in humanity. There are only unique ways of delivering content.  That’s why it’s important for YOU to know what’s happening in the ocean of influence we call the internet.

You want to know what courses your students are looking into, who’s influencing them, what influencers are telling them they need, the specific language the influencers are using to sell their courses, and what the courses are selling for.  This will help YOU get a good idea of how to position yourself, your course, AND your marketing message!


2nd you’re going to research, and develop a list of, SEO friendly keywords for your online course.  SEO stands for search engine optimization and its the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website or sales page through organic search engine results.  


Essentially, you want a LOT of traffic going to your online course page, and you want that traffic to come because people searched terms that directly relate to the content you share in your marketing message.


That’s what we call TARGETED KEYWORDS and TARGETED CUSTOMERS.  These are people that went to google, youtube, or pinterest,  and searched keywords and found YOU. 


3rd you’re going to research what your ideal customers and students are REALLY wanting. To do this you’re going to survey your students.  Whether it’s through an online tool like survey monkey, in a google form, interview style, or an old fashioned email…. your questions will support the customers in going deep into their challenges, what they REALLY want, as well as potential keywords they may search to find the answer!

Step #3: Content Creation

This is the FUN part! This is where you develop modules and build out each of your concepts and topics into a workshop like format.  


During the content creation phase, you’re going to script out your modules, develop implementation materials, build out bonuses, and choose your method for delivery.


When scripting your modules you’re going to use your framework, as well as the keywords that were determined when surveying your ideal students to guide your mind with the “meat” or details of your course. This is where you give your best knowledge and content, as well as strategies and tools to get your students results!


Lastly, you’ll choose your method of delivery whether it’s a video course, audio course, or a voiceover with a powerpoint.
